Melania, this is America. You can vote for Michelle.

melaniaMelania is in a pickle. I listened to her lovely speech about what she would do if she were First Lady. She said nice things. She said she would be an advocate for women and children. She explained that her job was to be a full-time mom and raise her ten-year-old son while her husband was traveling around the country running for President. She said that she had the same kinds of conversations with her son as any mom or dad would have with their son. I believed her. I admired her for wanting her little boy to know how blessed and fortunate he was.

Then she expressed how important it was to teach our youth American values which she listed as “kindness, honesty, respect, compassion, charity, understanding and cooperation.”

That’s when I started to feel squeamish. It didn’t make sense. If those are the values she most admires, then she married the wrong man. I’ve been watching Donald for a year now, and so far, I haven’t witnessed him display any of those values, much less all seven.

If the American values Melania admires had to do with being independent, industrious, ambitious, enterprising, and savvy, I would understand that. But her choices made me raise my eyebrows.

“Our culture has become too mean and rough,” Melania said as she vowed to fight… of all things… cyberbullying.

This statement caused my face to screw up into an expression of complete befuddlement. Was she trying to make a joke? Does she not see the irony? Everyone on the planet knows that Donald is the most famous, prolific and notorious bully, cyber or not.

What’s going on? It took me a minute, but I think I understand. If Donald Trump is elected President, Melania knows that her job as First Lady will be similar to her role as Barron’s devoted mother. That is, she will have to clean up after her husband and disinfect his really nasty messes.

Poor Melania.

But if all those wonderful values she described really mean something to her, there is something she can do about it. She can vote for somebody else.

Of course, she can’t vote for Hillary Clinton. To vote for your husband’s archenemy would be beyond the pale of matrimonial betrayal. Remember the episode of Everybody Loves Raymond where Debra runs for school board president and discovers that Ray voted for her rival? Yeah… Debra didn’t take that too well.

Melania doesn’t have to vote for Hillary, though. She can vote for someone who truly embodies all those attributes she admires. She can vote for Michelle Obama, who some people think will be a favorite write-in candidate on November 8th.

Melania, this is America, You can vote for Michelle.

And if your husband is hovering behind you, sniffing and snorting, making sure there’s no voter fraud going on, I encourage you to vote for Michelle anyway.

What’s another mess to clean up?

  • It must be hard raising her young son. Trying to instill within him her strong moral convections only to have him witness his father’s scandalous, and vicious behaviour. Prenuptial agreement or not. It’s time to save her child.
